Mission Overview

Organized by Dr. Marrietta Reformado, UHOH’s Humanitarian Director, this mission to KAANI Girls Secondary School in
Machakos County, Kenya, was part of our larger commitment to youth empowerment and gender-based advocacy. United
Hands of Hope (UHOH) aimed to uplift and support the girls through motivational speaking, food donations, and a creative
performance competition celebrating the talents of the students.

The event centered around the powerful theme:
“Talent Development as a Tool to Fight Femicide and Reduce Gender-Based Violence.”
By harnessing the creative voices of young girls, the event promoted talent as a channel to raise awareness, promote
dialogue, and combat gender injustice. Students showcased their resilience and creativity through expressive
performances.

  • Motivational Speech: Angelique Harrisson, Director of Administration, Finances & General Secretariat at UHOH, delivered
an empowering address on femicide, urging girls to speak out, stay strong, and use their talents as a voice for justice.
  • Student Performances: A total of KES 10,000 was awarded to participants across three categories of dancing, acting, and
fashion modelling each presenting powerful messages against gender-based violence.
  • Faculty & Student Interaction: UHOH representatives interacted with students and teachers, encouraging continued
advocacy and peer mentorship within the school community.

UHOH also provided a donation of food supplies to support the students’ nutritional needs. This contribution was aimed at
reducing hunger-related barriers to education, helping to create a stable and supportive learning environment.

“Good morning ladies,
Thank you for the warm welcome and the beautiful energy in this room. It’s an honour to be here today not just as a speaker, but as a sister, a woman, and an advocate for your future. Today, I want to talk about something painful but
powerful: femicide.

Femicide is the killing of women and girls because of their gender. It is the final, most violent form of gender-based
violence and it’s happening in our homes, our streets, and sometimes, even in our schools. And most of the time, it starts
with the small things: the jokes that say women are weak, the silence when girls are harassed, the belief that a woman’s
life is worth less than a man’s.

But I’m here to tell you something different. You are not weak. You are not invisible. And you are not powerless.
Every time you speak up, every time you protect a friend, every time you demand better you are standing against
femicide. You are saying, “My life matters.” And it does. Some of you may have heard stories, or even seen things in your
own homes or neighbourhoods stories of sisters who never came back, friends who were silenced, mothers who were
bruised. Let me be clear: You are not responsible for what happened to them — but you have the power to make
sure it doesn’t happen again.

So how do we do that?

  • We educate ourselves.
  • We raise our voices.
  • We look out for one another.
  • And most importantly — we never stay silent.

The world will try to tell you to be quiet, to be small. But you are here today to learn, to grow, and to lead. You are the
generation that can end femicide. You are the voice that will break the silence.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t.
You are light.
You are power.
You are the change we’ve been waiting for.
Thank you.”

This outreach reaffirmed UHOH’s dedication to gender equality through education and creative empowerment. Inspired by
the success at KAANI, UHOH plans to expand the “Girls’ Empowerment Through Talent” initiative across additional
schools in Kenya continuing to spotlight girls’ voices, safety, and leadership.

“You don’t have to be a victim of silence. Your voice, your story, and your talent are your greatest weapons. Never let
anyone silence your light.”
— Angelique Harrisson, UHOH Director of Administration, Finance & General Secretariat
